It is wonderful to read Carl Jung’s interpretations of dreams.

What follows is the dream of “Case Y”:

I am wandering over a great mountain; the way is lonely, wild, and difficult. A woman comes down from the sky to accompany and help me. She is all bright with light hair and shining eyes. Now and then she vanishes. After going on for some time alone I notice that I have left my stick somewhere, and must turn back to fetch it. To do this I have to pass a terrible monster, an enormous bear. When I came this way the first time I had to pass it, but then the sky-woman protected me. Just as I am passing the beast and he is about to come at me, she stands beside me again, and at her look the bear lies down quietly and lets us pass. Then the sky-woman vanishes.”

Carl Jung’s dream interpretation:

“Here we have a maternally protective goddess related to bears, a kind of Diana or the Galla-Roman Dea Artio. The sky-woman is the positive, the bear the negative aspect of the ‘supraordinate personality,’ which extends the conscious human being upwards into the celestial and downwards into the animal regions.” (Carl Jung, CW 9i, para. 340-1)

  1. An esoteric interpretation would be that the higher I (sky-woman) protects the lower I on it’s path. The dreamer have gone astray, have lost her stick, and must return to get on track again. The bear is karmic problems she isn’t ready to handle yet, so she is helped around it through her higher I (dharma).
Karma, the subconscious, is the negative aspect of the supraordinate personality, and dharma, the higher ‘I’, the positive aspect of the supraordinate personality.
