Edward Edinger (1999, p 21) relates the sword to the alchemical concept of septaratio.  He adds that it relates to “the discriminating process of consciousness which cuts up the state of participation mystique“.

The sword cuts, and the primal unity is broken. We emerge from a state of oneness into duality, conflict, and strife.  We split off from the divine creating a primal rupture. It is the path of struggle upon which we all must journey. We must emerge from the state of oneness, ever seeking to return to this primal state of wholeness.
